Higher Physical Education provides learners with the opportunity to further develop performance, knowledge and understanding through practical participation and in-depth analysis of physical activity. The course encourages learners to take a more independent and reflective approach to learning, supporting the development of confident, motivated and responsible individuals who value lifelong participation in physical activity.
Learners will take part in various physical activities from different categories, such as team games, dance, racquet sports and outdoor activities. Through practical performance, learners will refine advanced physical skills, techniques and movement patterns, while developing fitness, control and consistency under pressure. The course places significant emphasis on performance development, requiring learners to analyse their own performance, identify areas for improvement and apply relevant methods to enhance performance.
Throughout the course, learners will develop a wide range of mental skills, including decision-making, problem-solving, concentration and the ability to plan and evaluate training programmes. Learners will also enhance personal and social skills, such as leadership, communication, teamwork and self-management, through roles including performer, leader and observer.
A key focus of Higher Physical Education is the ability to evaluate performance critically. Learners will investigate the impact of physical, mental, emotional and social factors on performance and use data and feedback to justify performance development decisions. These analytical and evaluative skills are highly transferable and support progression to further education, employment and leadership roles.
Pupils will be assessed in 2 'one off' performances and sit a written exam.
Successful completion of Higher Physical Education provides progression to Advanced Higher Physical Education, university or college courses in sport and exercise science, physical education, coaching, health and fitness, sports development and outdoor education.
