Higher Geography helps learners understand the world around them — how landscapes are formed, how people live and move, and how global issues such as development and health inequalities and the sustainable management of river basins affect people and places.
The course builds skills in mapwork, data interpretation, decision-making, and research. It is ideal for pupils who enjoy exploring real-world issues and developing practical skills that are valued by employers, colleges, and universities.
Assessment:
Question Paper 1 – Physical & Human Environments
Written exam, assesses knowledge, understanding, and skills. Worth 100 marks
Question Paper 2 – Global Issues & Geographical Skills
Written exam, includes a map reading decision-making task. Worth 60 marks
Assignment
Completed in class time, written up under exam conditions. Based on a chosen geographical topic researched by the learner. Worth 30 marks
Entry Requirements:
A pass at National 5 Geography (usually A–C).
We also welcome pupils who have not studied National Geography but have achieved well in another social subject (e.g. History or Scottish Studies) and can show strong literacy and analytical skills.
