The SQA Level 5 Childcare qualification is designed for pupils who are interested in working with children and wish to develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to support their learning and development. This course provides a strong foundation for anyone considering a career in childcare, education, or related fields.
Throughout the course, pupils will explore how children grow, learn, and develop, both physically and emotionally. They will learn about the importance of safe, caring, and stimulating environments, and how to support children’s needs through play, routines, and activities. Pupils will also develop an understanding of health, hygiene, nutrition, and safeguarding practices to ensure children’s wellbeing at all times.
The course focuses on developing a wide range of practical and transferable skills. Pupils will learn how to plan and deliver age-appropriate activities, communicate effectively with children and adults, observe and assess children’s learning, and work collaboratively in group settings. They will also develop problem-solving, organisation, time-management, and reflective skills through planning and evaluating activities.
In addition to practical skills, pupils will gain confidence, patience, and understanding of child development and professional responsibility. The course encourages empathy, teamwork, and leadership, preparing learners for both further study and employment in the sector.
The SQA Level 5 Childcare qualification is an excellent choice for pupils who enjoy working with children, want to develop essential life and career skills, and are considering a future in early learning, childcare, or education.
On successful completion of the SQA Level 5 Childcare qualification, pupils can progress into entry-level roles within the childcare and education sector.
Possible opportunities include:
nursery assistant,
childcare support worker,
playgroup assistant, or
after-school club assistant.
The course also provides a strong foundation for further study, such as NC or HNC Childhood Practice, or training in early learning and childcare.
The skills gained—planning activities, supporting children’s development, communication, teamwork, and safeguarding—prepare learners for both paid work and voluntary roles in nurseries, schools, and community child-focused programmes.
