S3, NPA and Higher Photography
Courses at all levels share similar skills.
NPA and Higher course have independent practical project-based outcomes for SQA assessment. NPA also has written/research element internally assessed for SQA.
Higher has content based multiple choice and analytical written exam for SQA.
Communication components:
• Following verbal instructions
• Listening and taking notes during class discussions
• Using IT Word, PowerPoint, Teams, Forms, Photoshop, uploading and managing files
• Working collaboratively, sharing ideas and information through discussion
• Evaluative comments/ written understanding of techniques, photographer’s work for
written exam
• Communicating themes and ideas through pupils own photographic work
• Data literacy – using histograms (higher level) and meta data (Aperture/Shutter
Speed/ ISO) to understand photographic work
Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving components:
• Creativity, originality, innovation, Ideas for Photoshoots
• researching photographers and techniques
• Analysing the work of photographers
• Planning photoshoots (ideas, imagining, visualising)
• reviewing/evaluating, setting next steps,
• Curiosity-looking closely at the subject/environment, seeing familiar places in new
ways
Collaboration components:
• Working collaboratively on shoots
• Sharing equipment
• Sharing ideas/brainstorming
• Making personal connections, making models feel at ease, capturing the personality

Personal Responsibility components:
• Resource management (cameras, charging batteries looking after SD cards, storing
files, using studio lighting, props, etc.)
• Time management planning ahead for weather, when to go on shoots, arranging
models (availability, etc.)

• Meeting deadlines
• Dealing with unexpected situations especially on photoshoots (resourcefulness)
• Getting out in fresh air (wellbeing)- outdoor classroom and on photoshoots
• Pupils consider health and safety, creating risk assessments for shoots
Digital skills / product design with photography
Developing skills that would be developed further on at Higher Art & Design for
graphics/textiles folios and Advanced Higher folios · Developing Digital Media skills
with a creative design focus that would be an introduction the
skills required for Creative Industries such as graphics. Gaming, Animations, Web
design, etc. The emphasis would be on digital skills rather than traditional art and
design skills and could be more inclusive for pupils of all abilities.
