The Practical Woodworking course provides opportunities for pupils to gain a range of theoretical and practical woodworking skills relating to tools, equipment, processes and materials. Successful completion of this course will see pupils develop a good work
ethic by improving their interpersonal communication, creativity and teamwork skills.
The course is practical, exploratory and experiential in nature. It engages candidates with technologies, allowing them to consider the impact that practical technologies have on our environment and society. Through this, they develop their problem solving and listening skills and become aware of sustainability issues in a practical woodworking context.

Job roles in Scotland for individuals with practical woodwork skills include:
Site Joiner/Carpenter: Building and repairing structures on construction sites, including floor and roof joists, staircases, and partition walls (first fixings), as well as installing doors, skirting boards, and fitted furniture (second fixings).
Bench Joiner: Manufacturing prefabricated parts like doors, windows, and staircases in a workshop setting before they are installed on-site.
Cabinet Maker/Furniture Maker: Creating bespoke furniture and high-quality interiors for homes, shops, bars, and offices.
Shopfitter: Producing and installing the interiors and fronts of commercial premises such as shops and restaurants.
Wood Machinist/CNC Operator: Operating and programming computer-controlled (CNC) woodworking machinery to produce precision components in a manufacturing environment.
Maintenance Joiner: Performing routine maintenance and repairs for local authorities, facility management companies, or private clients.
Timber Frame Fabricator: Working in a factory to produce timber frame panels for new buildings.
