Teaching from Rest:

An afternoon of training and conversation

On January 22, we are excited to welcome all co-teachers to St. Matthew's chapel for a time to consider the book, Teaching From Rest, and how we might apply its principles on homedays. After a time of worship, conversation and prayer, the following break-out sessions will be offered: 

•  "Discipling Our Kids (and finding joy!) on the Hard Homeschool Days: How meltdowns can be our biggest opportunities to foster spiritual and emotional maturity" (Stephanie Claus)

• "Parenting from Rest: Practical ways to Create a Restful Home Atmosphere" (Mick and Stephanie Murray)

• "Changing our Math Mindset: Teaching Numbers from Rest" (Michelle Steele)

• "A New Rating System: How to Choose Stories for Your Children" (Krista Weathers)

This is a required training, but we need your RSVP to this LINK in order to arrange space and seating. Thank you!

It was so wonderful to see all the smiling faces after after a long Christmas break. I truly hope that your family experienced the wonder of Christ's birth anew this season.  This week, we began learning our new hymn, "Come thou Fount of Every Blessing" and talked about how our hearts are prone to wander, but Jesus always finds us, even when we try to hide. (Ask your child what a "fetter" is!)

Sometimes it can be hard to carry forward into a new year whatever rest and renewal our families received during a break. I'm praying for grace as you revisit old homeday rhythms or develop new ones which bring a peaceful, non-anxious presence to your learning this year.

This quarter, our students will begin their studies of Vermeer, known as the "painter of light," and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, one of the most influential composers of the classical period. They will also wonder at the harmony of God's creation through a careful study of FISH. All students in first through 5th grades will even get to observe the inside of a dissected fish. Is someone in your family an avid fisherman who would like to come and inspire your child's class? Contact their classroom teacher! We would love to have you!

Brrr! It's Cold!

Temperatures are dropping, but students are still going outside. Please remember to send your children with warm outerwear which they can wear on the playground. Make sure it is labeled!

• January Chapel: Our Logic School chapel hymn for the month of January is Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing. In Quarter 3, students will memorize Psalm 139:1-18

• Upper School Fine Arts Night is April 10. More information regarding times, preparation, dress code, etc is coming soon.

• 6th Grade Field Trip to UTA: On the events calendar given out at the beginning of the year, Jan. 17th was scheduled for a 6th grade field trip to UTA. For a few reasons, we are currently working to reschedule this field trip. More to come soon, however know that Jan. 17th will be a normal class day.

• Mr. Mooney is looking for parents who are interested in helping Valor students develop in the classical common arts (such as woodworking, blacksmithing, gardening, welding, cooking, livestock care, fence mending, knitting, carpentry, hunting, agriculture, etc.) While we already develop our students in the seven liberal arts through our academic programming, we're looking for creative ways to build programming around the common arts. If you are interested in helping realize this vision, email charlie.mooney@valorprep.com! (See the video below.)

• 10th/11th - Don't forget: A number of students signed up with Dr. Escobar to take the mock ACT exam tomorrow (1/11/25). The gate will open at 8:45am and the exam will begin at 9:00am. The whole test takes 2'55'' plus breaks, so it should end by 12:30. Ninth (9th) graders do not participate in this, because the mathematical content of the exam is beyond 9th grade.

• In RS chapel on Monday, we will have guest speaker and Valor dad, Paul Mason, who will lead us through the beginning of this quarter's Valor memory verse, Psalm 139:1-18!

• The VASE art competition is coming up on February 15, at Harker Heights High School. Students who have questions or are interested should contact kaylee.davis@valorprep.com. Any RS student may participate.
