The Last of My Name
By: Weston Matthew Schroeder
My full name is Weston Matthew Schroeder.
My name means family. According to the Surname Database, my last name Schroeder comes from the German occupational name for a cloth cutter or a tailor because the word “schroden” means to cut. This fits the rest of my name because I was named after my mother's maiden name, West, which in a way means my name was cut from the same cloth as my family. My name is like the t-shirts everyone gets at the family reunion that they put on for a picture to remind them that family is the reason why they’re there.
I was named this way because my mother’s maiden name was dying. She came from a family that had four kids, but they were all daughters that would take a different last name when married. My name, Weston, was the last thing that would be left after my grandparents passed. My middle name, Matthew, is also my dad’s name so my name is connected to family aspects in just about every way possible. So that’s how I try to live my life. I carry my family's values that they’ve taught me into everything that I do. My mother grew up on a farm so they taught me to always work hard and to get my hands dirty. My dad’s mom died from a brain tumor, so they showed me what it was like to be there for each other when everyone needed it the most. Most of all, they’ve taught me how important family is and to always keep your family close.
Ultimately, the fate of the family name did not end up solely on my shoulders. One of my aunts ended up keeping her last name, even through marriage, so the West name has a true predecessor in Samuel West, my cousin.
