by Andrew Kovacs
Putting on clothes that don't quite fit. That’s how my name feels when I write it down. My name is Andrew, however on every paper, sports team, and grade school class list, I was always known as Drew Kovacs. Andrew is a common name, even my roommate is Andrew. We and 20,738 other boys born in 2005 share the name (Social Security). Andrew is Greek for “manly” and “strong” (Andrew - Baby Boy Name Meaning, Origin, and Popularity) and after lifting my head, my parents initially saw it as a perfect fit.
Right after I was born, I was placed on my mother’s chest and apparently moments later I lifted my wobbly head. It was at that moment my name was chosen, Initially, a few names were apparently in the running, with Evan being the primary candidate. To say I am happy that my name was not chosen is an understatement as I do not think it accurately represents who I am. However, my parents followed their instincts on what name seemed to match the best at that moment but clarified the shortened version of my name in the hospital, hours after being born.
Everyone has called me Drew since day one. It is the name that actually fits me as I don’t have to do a double-take when someone calls out that name. It’s derived from Andrew and while it is Greek for “courageous,” it is also Welsh for “wise” (Drew), which is fitting considering I am half Welsh thanks to my proud grandma. So Drew is just what has stuck since and not just because of who I am but also because my parents did not envision me as an “Andy.” Honestly, I am grateful for that. Drew is also the name of a famous football player, and since I weighed in at 9 pounds 1 ounce (sorry Mom), it fit me perfectly. They made sure “Drew” was the name that everyone heard and knew me by and had no issue with correcting people if they said otherwise.
Drew fits like that one favorite comfortable sweatshirt that you never want to take off. While I may be Andrew officially, Drew is who I truly am.
