To people unfamiliar with the building’s history, it is simply known as Weiser Hall, but to those who know about the man it is named after, it is more fittingly known as “Weiser Hall for Voter Suppression, Political Assassination and Witch Burning.” Originally given its name to celebrate donations to the University of Michigan (U-M) made by past graduates, Weiser Hall has been under fire by students to be renamed.
Weiser Hall "is home to several interdisciplinary and international-focused units within LSA and is a center for active and engaged learning" (Fitzgerald). It was named Weiser Hall in 2018 as part of a $50 million dollar donation agreement from dual U-M alum couple Ronald and Eileen Weiser in 2014 (“The Weiser Family”).
Ronald Weiser, an alumnus of U-M's Ross School of Business, was elected as a U-M Regent in 2016 (“Ron Weiser”). According to the Michigan Regent's website, he serves leadership roles with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation, the US Holocaust Museum, and a fundraising effort at the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. "Weiser founded McKinley Associates Inc., a national real estate investment company, in 1968 and was its chairman and chief executive officer until 2001" when he left to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the Slovak Republic until 2005 (“Ron Weiser”). Eileen Lappin Weiser, who has her master’s degree in piano performance from U-M, has served on a variety of organizations for the university as well as being on Michigan's State Board of Education ("$1.1 million gift...").
According to Kim Broekhuizen on U-M’s The University Record, Weiser Hall was first opened in 1963 as the Physics and Astronomy Building as part of the College of Literature, Science, and Arts (LSA). Years later in 1976, the building was renamed as the “Dennison Building” to honor David Dennison, a former chair for the university’s Department of Physics (Broekhuizen). After reopening from renovations in 2018, the building received its current name (“The Weiser Family”). However, due to some recent controversies surrounding Ronald Weiser, a third name change was considered but ultimately decided against in 2021 (Fitzgerald).
Weiser, who is chair of the Michigan Republican Party (Fitzgerald), was initially criticized for not denouncing the U.S. capitol riots that occurred under President Trump’s presidency in 2021, as stated in a Michigan Daily article by Scarlett Bickerton. In the same article, it was stated that months later, Weiser would label three Michigan Democratic women in office as “the three witches.” Furthermore, he also "joked" about how “assassination” of representatives in the Michigan Republican Party who didn’t agree with the capitol riots would be the only viable method of removing them from office (Bickerton).
These comments were not well received by the U-M community, particularly due to their disrespectful nature and disdain towards women. In response, a petition calling for Weiser’s resignation from the position of regent and the renaming of Weiser Hall received over 7200 signatures (Bickerton).
In addition, the university’s Board of Regents called for Weiser to resign from the board, passing in a unanimous vote of 5-0, with Weiser and one other regent abstaining from the vote (Gupta). Nonetheless, Weiser chose not to step down. Soon after, a U-M group consisting of both students and faculty known as the Network for the Ongoing Reconsideration of our Nomenclature (NoRon) held a mock inauguration at Weiser Hall (Gupta).

Michigan Daily Reporter Navya Gupta also states that they covered up the Wieser Hall name sign with one saying “Weiser Hall for Voter Suppression, Political Assassination and Witch Burning,” exclaiming that Weiser should resign from his position for his misogynistic and harmful comments. NoRon also called upon the university to reconsider the naming of its campus buildings, namely Weiser Hall (Gupta). Conflicting with the sentiments of the U-M community, the U-M Office of Public Affairs ultimately sided with Weiser and announced that they would not be renaming Weiser Hall despite the recent events (Bickerton).
Meaning “wise” in German, Weiser is a name that signifies prudence (“Weiser Surname”). Unfortunately, Ronald Weiser’s unprofessional remarks have demonstrated the opposite, and reflect poorly on his name. After someone is given an honor or title, it is still their responsibility to behave in a way befitting that title, and Weiser is no exception. Ronald Weiser failed to uphold the values of respect and diversity that the University of Michigan stands for, and so both students and faculty alike have deemed him unworthy of representing the school.
