By Justin Bolton
A name is an essential aspect of one's identity, representing the very essence of who we are as individuals. It is a powerful tool for communication, self-expression, and self-identification, defining how we perceive ourselves and how others perceive us. A name encapsulates our cultural identity, our familial history, and the characteristics we possess, serving as a symbolic representation of our entire existence.
As I reflect on my name, I can only thank my parents for naming me, Justin. My name carries a sense of nobility, which appeals to my sensibilities, and I appreciate how my name has become synonymous with my identity. The name Justin has Latin origins that mean “just,” “upright,” or “righteous.” According to thebump.com, “Justin is a name symbolic of virtue and justice.” Learning the meaning of my name filled me with pride and honor. The message of being fair and righteous is a principle that I live by, and my name reinforces my commitment to that cause. I have always been drawn to the concept of empathy, and I feel that my name is a testament to this value.
Conversely, my last name, Bolton, has a different origin and meaning. According to Houseofnames.com, “the name is derived from when the Bolton family lived in Lancashire and Yorkshire, where they derived their name from any of several places named Boulton or Bolton. The name literally means a district, characterized by bends from the Old English words bends and land”. According to the same website, the Bolton motto is “Vi et virtute” which means “By strength and valour.” This motto makes me proud to have my last name. Strength and valor are characteristics I strive to possess and something that I would want to pass down to my children when they have my last name.
Depending on who I’m with, I get called by both my first and last name. My friends at Michigan and at camp call me by my last name, while my high school friends and family call me by my first name. I also have different nicknames like Bolt, JB, and Big Bolt, which my friends call me because sometimes it is easier to say that than my actual name. And it doesn’t matter what my friends call me because I feel connected and proud to bear each name.
A name carries your cultural identity, history, and characteristics as a person. My name, Justin Bolton, carries meaning and a legacy that I am proud to hold. It reminds me of the fundamental principles a person should possess in life. I am determined to live up to the values that my name represents, and I am grateful to my parents for giving me a name that I can be proud of.
