by Aiden Gomez
There’s no way to say my name in Spanish. Growing up in a Mexican household and being able to speak Spanish is something I’ve always been proud of. But at times I’ve felt like my name Aiden never embodied that Mexican side that I have in me. When you hear Aiden Gomez you stop. It pulls you out of the flow of the conversation, one name not fitting with the other. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned how to appreciate my name more. Aiden’s come to represent my first generation American status with my last name connecting me back to my family heritage.
I hold a lot of pride in my last name: Gomez. Not because it was the last name given to me at birth but because of how far that last name has come from past generations. Whenever I think of my last name it reminds of my dad and my grandpa, which are two extremely hard working men that were both born in Mexico and immigrated to the U.S. Both of them never attend college and no one on my dad’s side of the family has made it farther than high school… until me! I plan to be the first one in my family to have the last name Gomez on a college diploma and a diploma that says The University of Michigan at the top, no less!
I questioned my parents on why the name Aiden out of all of the names they could’ve given me? Afterall, Aiden was ranked the 60th most popular name in the United States the year I was born (2004). My mom told me they wanted a unique name for me that no one in our family had and didn’t have any Spanish origin behind it. The name Aiden has Irish and Gaelic origins meaning “little fire” (The Bump). Little fire definitely describes how I am as a warm hearted person with a pinch of fiery emotions.
As I’ve gotten older I’ve learned how to appreciate my name more, especially since growing up I wasn’t the biggest fan of it. Now I see my name as something that holds a lot of value in making me the person I am today, it's the name my parents gave me at birth which has gotten me far in life and will continue to get me far in life no matter the circumstances.
