by Nicholas Borowski
“Nicholas James Borowski would be a great name for a Lawyer”, says my Mom anytime I ask her how I got my name. While I don’t want to become a lawyer I definitely do see my parent's vision with that name choice. I’m also not convinced that I wasn't named after Saint Nicholas because I was born just 2 days after Christmas and that is just too big of a coincidence for me to ignore. My name, Nicholas, originated in Greece and means, “victory of the people” (Yip). I think that my 1st-grade teacher would agree that this meaning fits me, she was always telling me that I would be a great President because I always stand up for what’s right.
One thing that I don't like about my name is that it sounds kind of formal, and anyone who knows me knows that I am not a formal person. This is why anytime someone asks for my name I tell them it’s Nick. However, I do like that in a professional setting I can go by Nicholas because, at least in my opinion, it makes me seem more professional and serious. I guess this association could be because my Mom always called me by my full name whenever she was seriously upset with me. In this case, I would say that the way my name fluctuates between Nick and Nicholas is very similar to the way I fluctuate from being chill to serious.
A fun fact about my name is that it was the 13th most popular name in the year that I was born (Popular Names in 2004). A lot of people don't want a common or basic name but I actually enjoy it. I think that there is something really cool about meeting someone who has the same name as you. As soon as I find out someone has the same name as me it creates a sort of instant bond. There is definitely a con to this though, when the substitute teachers would do attendance and there were multiple Nick’s in the class.
While my first name might not have an emotional meaning my middle name, on the other hand, was given to me because it was my grandpa's name. I never got to meet him because he died long before I was born. However, from what I’ve heard he was a great person, and because of that I am honored to share the same name as him.
With all that's been said I think that my name in that of itself is not that significant, but the way in which I got my name is.
