Mommy, how'd you know my name will fit me?
By Eitan Ben Shitrit
My name is Eitan, and it was given to me by my mother. Eitan (איתן) is a Hebrew name that means "strong" and "steady” ("מה זה איתן"). In Israel, where I'm from, middle names are not common. Eitan is what I've been called my whole life. I am Eitan and Eitan is me. No way to run from it.
For a long time, I didn't think my name fits me. My mom jokes about how when I was a little kid I told her: “But mommy, you had no idea if I’ll turn out like my name! How’d you know?”
I used to lack confidence, and I didn't see my strengths. As I grew older, I came to appreciate my character, the meaning behind my name, and the strength it represents.
Despite my initial doubts, people have told me that my name's meaning fits me well. I've been praised for my determination and resilience, which I believe are reflected in my name.
Whenever I meet someone new and they ask about my name, it reminds me of home. Being from Israel, Eitan is a common name, but it's also deeply rooted in our culture. It's a name that connects me to my heritage and is a constant reminder of where I come from.
My name is an important part of who I am. It reminds me of my strength and resilience and it connects me to my roots. Talking about my name with others always brings me a sense of comfort and nostalgia, and it's a reminder of the importance of embracing our identities and the qualities that make us unique.
