My name was given to me by my mom. I was named after her mother Alicia Wilson. My mothers actually decided to share the reason she named me after her. Now most people get named after someone because that person is usually very important to them or played a big role in their life. Well now my mother does love my grandmother but none of that has to deal with the reason. She used me as a get out of jail free card as some would say. My mother was 19 and pregnant so when she told my grandmother my name she couldn't be mad at her right. I always felt closure to my grandmother since we shared the same name. The only reason I ever did not like my name was because growing up people could never pronounce my name the right way. Many teachers chose to just callme by my last name if they could not pronounce it right.
In 2003 the year I was born the first name Alicia was ranked 131 so not very popular.(SSA) Alicia was said to be a variation of Alice. Alicia has multiple unique spellings and multiple different ways of saying it. My name actually has a surprising meaning, it means “noble kind” or “ of noble birth.” Alicia has roots of old German and Spanish origins. (Audrie, et al)
The other option for my first name was Marie but now its my middle name. Growing up my mother and other family members called me Marie instead of Alicia. I also didn't mind that at all, I liked how Marie sounded and never had a problem with it. Having my first name as Marie sounded unique, but having my middle name as Marie is not that unique. Growing up, I realized how common the middle name Marie is. A lot of my friends through school seem to have some type of variation of Marie. I also have many family members with the middle name Marie .
While the name Marie has the meaning “from the sea” in latin terms. It also means “bitterness” in Hebrew. Marie has a French origin but with Latin and Hebrew as well. (Mom Loves Best) While my middle name marie has fluctuated over the years. It's more popular as the name mary if we are talking about first names but many people have given their daughters the middle name marie. It became even more popular in the 1970’s when Elvis Presley gave his daughter the middle name Marie. (Laurence)
