The Donald R. Shepherd Softball Center is the home of 11 Big Ten titles, one national championship, and 22 conference titles (Michigan Athletic). It's a place where student athletes dedicated to greatness thrive. Named after alumnus businessman Donald Shepherd, the softball center was donated in an attempt to counteract the pay discrepancy between men’s and women's athletics.
The Shepherd facility is part of the Wilpon Baseball and Softball Complex boasts over 10-thousand square feet of modern architecture with large floor to ceiling windows housing training space, recovery rooms, and team offices with a price tag of more than five million dollars (“Data”). The facility used the previous softball building’s layout but implemented additions and renovations in 2014. Along the halls are years worth of accolades detailing the program's history of success along with a museum dedicated to the softball team (“Wilpon”). Inside, players can be seen receiving physical therapy, game planning with coaches, practicing on indoor fields, meeting with mental health coaches, and weight training (“Wilpon”).

"After graduating from Fenton High School [in Fenton Michigan] in 1954, Shepherd received a scholarship to attend the University of Michigan" where he studied engineering and business (Mathay). The scholarship was something he never forgot as he went on to manage Loomis, Sayles and Co.'s investment portfolios and eventually become CEO (Mathay). "Shepherd first gave to the University of Michigan in 1972 – and he has given every year since. His contributions have gone to various U-M projects in music, athletics, and business; Shepherd first focused his contributions on football and ice hockey, but switched to women's athletics as they they were not as well-funded (Mathay). In addition to financial contributions, Shepherd has also served UM as part of the “President's Advisory Committee, Athletic Advisory Committee, Investment Advisory Committee, School of Music Advisory Committee, and as an Elbel Club Chairman with the Michigan Marching Band" (Mathay). In addition to the softball complex, there's also a women's gymnastic's training center named after Shepherd.
The name Donald comes from the "Scottish Gaelic name Dòmhnall meaning 'ruler of the world,' composed of the Old Irish elements domun 'world' and fal 'rule'," according to Behind the Name. This is fitting for the name of a facility that is home to the women's softball team that won the NCAA Division I Women's College World Series in 2005 and so many other accolades over their almost 50 years.
