Artist Statement

For this project, we were first assigned to create a value scale using a piece of scratchboard to get ourselves comfortable with how to use the scratch tools/how hard or light you have to press to get the shade you want. Then, for our summative project, we were assigned to choose either a photograph we've taken or a drawing we've drawn and transfer that on to a piece of scratchboard. I chose a photograph of my cat, Ozzy, he's a gray cat so he has all kinds of different shades in his fur. The materials I used for this project was scratchboard, and scratch tools.

The elements of art I used in my project were value and lines to create texture. I used different types of lines in different directions (following Ozzy's fur) to create a sense of texture throughout my project. I used value by staying aware of the different shades in Ozzy's fur. It was a little hard for me to get started because I wasn't totally sure how to use the tools yet, but then I got the hang of it a little bit. I messed up Ozzy's right eye which really bothers me, but it's all good. The only thing I really don't like about this project is the noise it makes while you scratch.

Overall, I don't hate how my final piece came out, but I don't love it. Now that I know how to use the tools better I think if i were to do another piece I'd like it more. This was a cool project to do though.
