What a Magical Week at St. Andrews Samakee!

The halls have been buzzing, the library is overflowing with excitement, and our school has truly come alive for Book Week 2026! From captivating storytelling sessions to engaging literacy activities, it has been a brilliant week celebrating the joy of getting lost in a good book.

At Samakee, fostering a lifelong love for reading is a cornerstone of who we are, and seeing that spark in our students this week has been nothing short of inspiring.

Teaching and Learning Highlights!

Book Week Buddy Reading

During Book Week, the older classes from across the school spent time reading with the younger children. Year 1 were paired up with Year 5, creating a lovely opportunity for shared learning and connection. The children enjoyed choosing from a range of stories, including books about dinosaurs, Elmer the Elephant, The Princess and the Frog, and The Gruffalo.

This special experience encouraged a love of reading and storytelling, while also helping to build confidence and communication skills. Listening to older children read provided positive role models for fluency and expression, while also supporting the development of vocabulary and comprehension.

Sharing stories together also promoted social skills such as turn-taking, cooperation, and building relationships across year groups. Most importantly, it helped foster a lifelong enjoyment of books and reading in a fun and engaging way.

Exploring Maths with The BFG

In keeping with book week this week in Maths lessons year 6, 7 and 8 have been working on all of the Maths related to the Roald Dahl book The BFG. Students have been enjoying scaling things up to giant size, as well as working out volumes, speeds and distances, designing book shelves, drawing scale diagrams and measuring. Lots of fun and creativity. The BFG has a toothbrush that is 90 centimetres long - luckily he is the big friendly giant.

Travelling the Silk Road with a story to tell!

The Book Week theme came to the Humanities classroom this week - centuries ago the only way we new about far away places was by word of mouth. The students had a secret to tell but first they must brave the hazards of the Silk Road and remember their story! The story of how to make silk... a story so precious that the Emperor issued a law condemning anyone trying to share the secrets with the West, to death! Did our students make it on their perilous journey with the secret intact? Did the story change on its journey? YES! A great way to learn how stories were shared and exaggerated along the way!

Safeguarding Spotlight: Attendance & Safety

Keeping our children safe is a partnership between school and home. This week's focus:

Communication is Key - If your child will be absent or late, please inform the school office as soon as possible. We follow up all unexplained absences immediately as part of our safeguarding procedures. This ensures we know every child is safe.
Safe Arrival and Collection - Please ensure your child's driver/nanny knows our arrival and dismissal procedures. Any changes to usual collection arrangements must be communicated to the school office in advance. We will not release children to unfamiliar adults without prior authorisation.
Keep Contact Details Updated - In case of emergency or if your child becomes unwell during the school day, we need to reach you quickly. Please ensure we have current phone numbers for your child's carers: parents, grandparents, nannies, and or drivers, and notify us immediately.
