File to Multiple IDOCs - Tips & Tricks

File may contains hundreds of million of records, which are too huge to be placed into just 1 IDOC. So, it's quite common for us to either chop the file into smaller chunk or create multiple IDOCs from a file. The latter scenario will be discussed in this blog.

First, we need to change the IDOC multiplicity from 1 to unbounded. Below are steps required:

1. Import the IDOC into the SAP PI repository
2. Download the IDOC metadata as XSD file
3. Using XML editor, change the IDOC multiplicity from 1 to unbounded
4. Import back the modified IDOC metadata as external definition

Tips:

1. We must use the modified IDOC metadata (external definition) as a target message in the message mapping.
   • Over here, UDF is required to split the records into multiple IDOC. Please refer to my previous blog Controlling Multiplicity of IDOC using UDF.
2. However, we must use back the original IDOC metadata in the operation mapping, or else we will have error during the interface determination.
