Eswar Sarma (F.G.Natesa Iyer) , a clerk in a pawn shop, is married to Sumathi(M.S.Subbulakshmi). His widowed sister Gundamma also lives with them and she harasses Sumathi from time to time. Courtesan Kamalesh Kumari and her young daughter Suguna are their neighbours. Suguna comes regularly to

meet Sumathi and they become close.

Gundamma's harassment crosses limits and a depressed Sumathi goes to a garden and spends her time there. When the guard of the garden asks her to leave the place, Advocate Padhmanaba Iyer and his wife Subadhra who are present in the garden notice this treatment

,scold the guard and take Sumathi with them to their residence. After consoling Sumathi, Padhmanaba Iyer and Subadra bring her back to her residence. Easwar Sarma gets angry and beats her for going out with strangers.

Once Subadra takes Sumathi to her

residence,decks her with new clothes and jewels and Sumathi looks ravishing. Eswar Sarma who visits them on official work, gets shocked to see his wife in this manner and shouts at her and rushes out. At night, Subadra brings Sumathi back to her residence

When Suguna comes to meet Sumathi and plays pranks on Gundamma, Gundamma assumes that they

were done by Sumathi ,gets angry , scolds and beats Sumathi, who gets depressed ,visits a nearby temple, prays and sings in praise of Lord.

At the same time, another musical

performance by Kamalesh Kumari takes place in the same temple. The attention of the audience, gets diverted to the divine singing of Sumathi, and everyone rushes to listen to her and all praise for her singing. A few people meet Eswar Sarma and talk to him about her great singing talent . Sarma becomes more furious with her for becoming a public personality. When Sumathi returns home late,Sarma beats her at the instigation of Gundamma, throws her out of the home and locks the doors. Left with no one to support her, Sumathi seeks shelter

for the night and finally falls unconscious

before the house of Padhmanaba Iyer.

Iyer and his wife, take her inside and take care of her.

Gundamma misuses the closeness of

Sugna and Sumathi, and asks Suguna to bring eatables for Sumathi regularly. but eats them herself. One day, she gets caught by Sarma , who understands the real character of his sister. He is depressed with her heinous acts ......

Gundamma also realizes her mistake ,

regrets her errors and roams on the road like an insane person. Sumathi , staying in Padhmanaba Iyer's house, creates unwanted gossip So Iyer decides to send her out of his residence under some pretext. Sumathi comes to know of this . To avoid any further embarrassment to Iyer, she leaves the

residence and attempts suicide. She is

rescued by Kamalesh Kumari , taken to her home and encouraged to take up singing as a profession. Soon Sumathi becomes popular as 'Kokila Gana' Sumathi and earns wealth and

fame.

In the meantime, sumathi's sister

Santha,staying in her uncle's place is badly treated by her aunt.Here uncle finalizes her marriage. When the bridegrooms's family come to know that Sumathi is the sister of Santha, they cancel the marriage as they do not want to be associated with such a family.

A depressed Santha attempts suicide but gets rescued by Sumathi. The two sisters start Seva sadhanam, a home for orphaned and destitute girls. Sarma who realises his great mistake of suspecting his noble wife joins Sumathi in running the orphanage.

Gundamma also joins them soon . Sarma,

Sumathi, gundamma and Santha become social workers and serve humanity.

ஈஸ்வர சர்மா ஒரு அடகுக்கடை யில் குமாஸ்தாவாக வேலை பார்ப்பவர். அவரது மனைவி சுமதி.

• சர்மாவின் விதவை சகோதரி குண்டம்மாவும் அவர்களுடன் வசித்து வந்தார். எப்போது பார்த்தாலும் சுமதியை திட்டுவது , குண்டம்மாவுக்கு வழக்கம். மேடைப்பாடகி கமலேஷ் குமாரி யும்,அவரது புதல்வி சுகுணாவும் அவர்களது அடுத்த வீட்டில் வசித்து வந்தனர். சுகுணா அடிக்கடி சுமதியின் வீட்டுக்கு வருவாள். சுமதியும் சுகுணாவும் நெருங்கிய தோழிகளாக இருந்தனர். குண்டம்மாவின் வசவு ,எல்லை தாண்டிபோனது.

• இதனால் மனம் நொந்து போன சுமதி ஒரு தோட்டத்தில் போய் தஞ்சம் அடைகிறாள். தோட்டக்காரன் சுமதியை தோட்டத்தை விட்டு வெளியேறச் சொல்லி ,கடுமையாகப் பேசுகிறான். அப்போது வக்கீல் பத்மநாப அய்யரும் அவரது மனைவி சுபத்திராவும் அதைக்கண்டு வருத்தமடைந்து, தோட்டக்காரனை கண்டித்து ,சுமதியை தங்களது வீட்டுக்கு அழைத்துச் செல்கின்றனர். சுமதியைத் தேற்றி , சுமதியை அவளது வீட்டுக்கு கொண்டுசென்று பத்திரமாக விடுகின்றனர். ஈஸ்வர சர்மா மேலும் கோபம் கொண்டு, அயலாருடன் சென்றதற்காக சுமதியை அடித்து துன்புறுத்துகிறார்,

• ஒரு ,நாள் , சுபத்திரா சுமதியைத் தனது வீட்டுக்கு அழைத்துச் சென்று ,புதிய ஆடைகளும் ,சிறிது ஆபரணங்களும் அணிவித்து மகிழ்கிறாள். சுமதி புதிய தோற்றத்தில் மிகவும் அழகாக ஜொலிக்கிறாள். வேலை விஷயமாக அங்கு வந்த ஈஸ்வர சர்மா , தனது மனைவியை அந்த அலங்காரத்தில் பார்த்து கடும் கோபம் கொண்டு சத்தம் போட்டு , ஆவேசத்துடன் வெளியேறுகிறார். அன்று இரவு, சுபத்திரா , சுமதியை அவளது வீட்டில் கொண்டு வந்து சேர்க்கிறா

• சுகுணா , சுமதியைப் பார்க்க வந்து , குண்டாம்மாவை மறைமுகமாக கேலி செய்கிறாள். இதைச் செய்தது சுமதிதான் என்று நினைத்து குண்டம்மா, ஆத்திரம அடைந்து சுமதியைத் திட்டி அடித்து இம்சை செய்கிறாள். மனம் உடைந்து போன சுமதி, அருகில் இருந்த கோவிலுக்கு சென்று , வாய்விட்டுப் பாடி, தெய்வம் அவளைக் காப்பாற்ற மனம் இறங்க வேண்டும் என்று வேண்டுகிறாள்,

• அதே ,நேரத்தில் , அதே கோவிலில் பாடகி கமலேஷ் குமாரியின் கச்சேரியும் நடந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. சுமதியின் அற்புதக் குரலால் ஈர்க்கப்பட்டு அனைவரும் அந்தக் கச்சேரி யிலிருந்து வெளியேறி சுமதியின் பாட்டைக் கேட்க விரைகின்றனர்.அனைவரும் சுமதியை பாராட்டுகின்றனர். ஒரு சிலர் , சர்மாவிடம் அவரது மனைவியின் அற்புதக் குரல் பற்றி புகழ்ந்து பேசுகின்றனர். இரவு சுமதி வீடு சேர்ந்தவுடன், சர்மா ,குண்டம்மாவின், தூண்டுதலில், அவளை அடித்து வெளியே விரட்டி கதவை அடைத்து விடுகிறார். இரவு வேளையில் ஆதரவு இல்லாத நிலையில், செய்வதறி யாது திகைத்து, சுமதி , பத்மநாப அய்யர் வீட்டு வாசலில் மயக்கமுற்று விழுந்து விடுகிறாள். சற்று நேரத்தில் வக்கீலும் அவரது மனைவியும் , சுமதியைக் காப்பாற்றி தங்களது வீட்டிற்குள் கொண்டு சென்று காப்பாற்றுகின்றனர்.

• சுமதியும் சுகுணாவும் நெருங்கிய தோழிகள் என்பதால், சுமதிக்கு என்று சொல்லி குண்டம்மா சுகுணாவின் மூலம் இனிப்புகள் கேட்டு வாங்கி தானே சாப்பிட்டு வருகிறாள். ஒரு நாள் இதைக் கண்டுபிடித்த சர்மா, தங்கையின் செயல் பற்றி அவமானமும் கோபமும் அடைந்து, வெளியேறுகிறார்.

• குண்டம்மாவும் தனது செயலுக்கு வெட்கப்பட்டு , பைத்தியம் போல தெரூத் தெருவாக அலைகிறாள். \

• பத்மநாப அய்யர் வீட்டில் சுமதி தங்கியிருப்பது பற்றி , தவறான வதந்திகள் பரவ தொடங்குகின்றன. இதனால் சங்கடம் அடைந்த பத்மநாப அய்யர் , ஏதேனும் ஒரு சாக்கில் சுமதியை வேறு இடத்திற்கு செல்ல வைக்க யோசனை செய்கிறார். இது பற்றி அறிந்த சுமதி, தன்னால் அவருக்கு எந்த கெடுதலும் வரக்கூடாது என்று கருதி, வேறு எதுவும் வழி புலப்படாமல், தற்கொலை செய்து கொள்ள முயற்சி செய்கிறாள்,

• அப்போது, கமலேஷ் குமாரி, அவளைக் காப்பற்றி தனது வீட்டுக்கு கொண்டு சென்று. மன தைர்யம் கொடுக்கிறாள். 'இவ்வளவு நன்றாகப் பாடுகிறாயே! நீ ஏன் மேடைக் கச்சேரி செய்து வாழக்கூடாது?' என்று சுமதிக்கு மன தைர்யம் கொடுத்து, அவளை ஒரு பாடகியாக வாழ உதவி செய்கிறாள்.

• விரைவிலேயே,சுமதி மிகவும் புகழ் பெற்ற பாடகியாக , நிறைந்த செல்வமும் வசதியும் அடைகிறாள்.

• இதற்கிடையே . சுமதியின் தங்கை சாந்தா , அவளது மாமாவின் வீட்டில் வசித்து வருகிறாள். அவளது மாமியின் வசவுகள் , தாங்க முடியாமல் உள்ளன. சாந்தாவின் மாமா அவளை திருமணம் செய்து கொடுத்தால் ,துன்பம் தீரும் என்று நினைத்து, திருமண ஏற்பாடுகள் செய்கிறார். நிச்சயதார்த்தம் செய்ய வேண்டிய நேரத்தில் பிள்ளை வீட்டார் , சுமதியின் தங்கை சாந்தா என்பதை அறிந்து ,இப்படிப்பட்ட குடும்பத்தில் சம்பந்தம் செய்ய எங்களுக்கு இஷ்டம் இல்லை என்று திருமண ஏற்பாட்டை நிறுத்தி விடுகின்றனர். அதனால் மனம் உடைந்த சாந்தா தற்கொலைக்கு முயற்சி செய்கிறாள், \ சுமதிக்கு இது தெரிய வந்து தனது தங்கையை நேரத்தில் காப்பற்றி

• தனது வீட்டில் வசதியுடன் வசிக்க வைக்கிறாள்.

• இந்த இரண்டு சகோதரிகளும், தங்களைப் போல ஆதரவு இன்றி கஷ்டப்படும் இளம் பெண்களுக்கு புகலிடம் கொடுத்து வாழ்வளிக்க . சேவா சதனம் என்ற ஒரு இல்லம் அமைத்து , அபலைப் பெண்களுக்கு மன அமைதியும், ஆதரவும் வாழ்க்கை உதவியும் அளிக்கின்றனர்.

• நாளடைவில், இவ்வளவு உன்னதமான குணம் கொண்ட தனது மனைவி சுமதியை துன்பப படுத்தியதற்கு வெட்கமும் வேதனையும் அடைந்து, சர்மா தானும் அந்த சேவா சமாஜத்தில் பணி செய்ய வந்து சேர்கிறார்.

• குண்டம்மாவும் மனம் திருந்தி அதே பணியில் தன்னையும் ஈடுபடுத்திக் கொள்கிறாள்.

• இவ்வாறு சேவா சமாஜம் மூலம் சுமதியின் குடும்பம் முழுவதும், சமூக சேவையில் ஈடுபட்டு மனா நிறைவு கொள்கின்றனர்.
