What to consider when creating a logo for a business

Designing logos for companies is fun, but it can get complicated and time-consuming quickly, especially if the client keeps changing his or her mind or is simply unsatisfied with initial concepts. Here are some tips that should help beginning graphic designers optimize their logo concepts and deliverables.

Firstly, research thoroughly on the client’s type of business. Remember that the logo is meant to represent the business, its mission-vision, and its target market. Though it’s fine to make suggestions, the creation process is often not dependent on your own design ideas. Study closely the products or services the client sells to make the logo coincide best with the brand’s identity. When conceptualizing, make draft logos in black and white first. The rule of thumb here is that the logo should be as good-looking in black and white as it is in full color. Note that ads the company will run in newspapers will often not show the logo colors, as well as photocopies and faxes it will use for regular or internal documents distribution. Don’t just ride the hype and trends, from typefaces to patterns and colors currently popular in the market. These trends often get saturated and lose appeal after a few months. Aspire for a logo that appears more timeless and can be easily tweaked in the future if needed to make it look more current.

Lastly, make the company logo scalable, so that it always looks proportionate and thus versatile. Whether stamped on small documents or huge billboards, it should maintain its sense of proportion from all angles and always look starkly visible. Hey, there. The name’s Ram V.
