Climate change and global warming are increasingly becoming an international concern, seen in the arrival of massive storms, wildfires, and more and more plant and animal species making it to the endangered list. It doesn’t help that most of the damage comes from pollution and poor human waste management. We should therefore do our part in helping protect Mother Earth. This begins at home with recycling.
We can better live by the motto “reduce, reuse, recycle” by first reducing our consumption in general. We can find better, creative use for materials we often just throw away, particularly those made of plastic. They can become both functional and decorative stuff in the house, from makeshift garden pots to water containers. Make re-purposing a part of your daily mantra.
In the first place, we should have a clear idea of what can and cannot be recycled. For example, research on what particular products are recyclable and, if you cannot find any concrete use for them, have sets of distinct and labeled trash bins that segregate them from those that are not. On an even more basic level, we can even recycle our water by having our plumbing systems set up so that accumulated rainwater gets used for watering plants and flushing toilets.
Remember, too, that recycling is not just about advocacy, but support. It’s not enough that you find ways to reuse products that are, say, made of plastic; you should go to extra mile and avoid buying them in the first place and opt for recycled ones. A lot of house and office products and amenities now come recycled, from paper and packaging to cups and work chairs.
