There’s a variety of tuna out there, and the word “big” is relative for this fish (a yellowfin tuna will not grow as huge as a bluefin, for example). And while no list will be as comprehensive and encompassing as we’d hope it to be, we’ve compiled one, anyway. Here are some of the best spots in the globe for catching these awesome fish.

Westport, New Zealand: For those looking to game on Pacific bluefins, which could reach more than 600 pounds, this is the place to go. The Cova Rosa is a tried-and-tested spot for these monster fish.
Panama: The offshore, Pacific coast of this South American nation, is the home of yellowfin tuna. Game fishermen boast of catch coming in at nearly 300 pounds.
Cape Cod, Massachusetts: Unlike what its name suggests, it’s not the cod that attracts both amateur and professional fishermen to the area, but the promise of catching large, trophy bluefins. And not just Cape Cod; Stellwagen Bank is also a good tuna-fishing alternative when in the New England coast.

Nova Scotia/Prince Edward Island, Canada: The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) lists these maritime areas as venues for the record of biggest bluefin tuna catch, with an all-tackle catch weighing at almost 1,500 pounds.
