Before I became Ram Chary the graphic designer, I was a student trying to learn how to make good art. Thankfully, our tools these days are more advanced compared to the ones I used back in the day. Despite the evolution of design and technology, we still have to rely on our artistic sensibilities. When it comes to working on posters, here are some of the common mistakes we need to avoid: Using too many fonts We can create great art without overwhelming the people who will look at it. Most newbie graphic designers end up using lots of fonts when working on posters. Instead of using a different font for each line, you can use three fonts for the heading, the body, and the header or footer. This is especially applicable to posters that also have a lot of images. Sometimes it's best to keep it simple. Forgetting balance
Newbie designers often want to fill the space with images, shapes, or fonts. While my friends these days call me "Ram Chary the minimalist", I can relate to younger artists who get too excited and use all the elements in their copy. However, if you want to design an informative and memorable poster, make it balanced. Embrace the gaps. Emphasize the elements. Make the information clear. Let your creativity shine by letting viewers focus on the most important elements.
Overusing stock photos
I'm guilty of this too. However, remember that you're making a poster that needs to stand out. If you have no choice but to use stock photos, edit the photo or play with color and fonts so that your work won't look too common.
As graphic designers, the key is to keep on improving our skills while keeping in mind the needs of our clients. We should also keep in mind the people who will be looking at our designs.
