So you’ve taken a new hobby and you’re very much eager to get into the thick of things. You’ve even chosen what kind of photography you want to tackle – nature photography. You bought all the necessary equipment, costing you a pretty penny, and now have all your gear in place for the journey ahead. But here’s the thing. With all the excitement, you may have overlooked one very important aspect of photography – safety.

For nature photographers, it would a darn good idea to do research on the area. How often does it rain? And how much rain falls? Does the area flood? What about landslides? Where’s the nearest populated area in case you need help? Are there any natural predators in the area? These are questions that need to be asked. Also having someone tag along would be better for your overall safety.
Knowing the area inside out is key to preparation. You’ll know what clothes to bring, and you’ll have an escape route should anything untoward happen during your trip.
As for your gear, be sure they have all the necessary safety accessories. Also, be mindful of the elements. A lot of good cameras nowadays are water-resistant, but best to be sure. Bring important non-photography related essentials such as flashlights, radios, and food.
