Photography, like every other art form, brings about trends that can be overused. For a photographer to standout, having an eye for the subject and that creative touch can make something common look striking.
One of the photography trends that have experienced revival is the use of film. More people are welcoming the fact that they have to be conscious of the moments they are capturing instead of just snapping away on their DSLRs. The younger generation of photographers is also welcoming the thought of spending long hours in a dark room just to “treat” a photo. Instead of clicking away on their monitors, this handcrafted, intricate process is helping them appreciate the images they capture.

Utilizing flash and its sharp shadows has also proven to be quite a famous experiment among my colleagues. If we were trying to avoid it two years ago, these days, we have grown to like the frankness and the raw appeal it gives our subjects. It helps us also to learn more about lights and shadows.
Contrasting patterns are also a common subject photographers capture these days. If balance used to be the guiding principle before, today it’s about welcoming the element of surprise and looking for the real visual in a sea of others. This could be tricky to understand but I like how nowadays it’s okay to mix and match patterns with a subject.
