Graphic artists: These generally are fine artists who work on a graphic or digital medium. Most graphic artists are self-taught, but a growing number receive a short-term certificate training from a trade school. Graphic artists typically execute the ideas of a senior staff. In this, the work of a graphic artist is usually simpler than their seniors. There is a flip side to this. Graphic artists - because they are self-taught - are often more motivated and willing to learn. The newer, trendier designs (particularly with regards to street art and fashion sensibilities) are typically made by up-and-coming graphic artists.

Graphic designers: By definition, graphic designers are visual communicators. These are professionals who assemble a visually-pleasing (and organized) arrangement of graphics, from images to typography to motions. Designers are used as marketing tools; with many companies relying on them to build their brand. Most graphic designs are made for print or electronic media. The growth of technology has made online or digital designs even more importance. Most likely, designers graduate with a degree focus on graphics software. Their work is more streamlined and clear-cut.

As you can see, there are overlapping qualities to both professions. Regardless, there is a distinction that must be emphasized, especially in the professional setting.
