EP Transport Committee approved the installation of scanners at European airports

European Parliament's Transport Committee on Tuesday approved the introduction of body scanners in European airports.

The text, approved by a large majority (37 votes for, two against and three abstentions), states that can not be used ionizing devices, and images are used by privacy principles.

Thus, MEPs rejected the possibility of using X-ray scanners that emit ionizing radiation, used increasingly more in the United States.

The text states that European passengers will be able to refuse to pass through scanners, choosing plant controls. Also climbing the liquids ban on aircraft should expire in 2013.

Commission vote will be confirmed in the European Parliament plenary session.

In 2008, the EP has voted against the installation of scanners at airports.

"Four years later, with technological developments, we believe that these devices can help increase security without health risks to passengers, " commented project rapporteur, Spanish MEP Luis de Grandes Pascual.
