My grandfather CS Ananthan Nair worked in the Survey of India and for a few years served as Surveyor in the Royal Indian Engineers unit of the army.

In July 1947, just before India became independent, he received this letter from Col. G.H. Osmaston (who later retired as Brigadier), the then Director of Survey, India Command, informing him that he was in the King's Birthday Honours 1946.

GHO was closely associated with the then young Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, who would become the first man to climb Mt Everest. He was a founder member of the Himalayan Club.
