La Trinité chrétienne attribue à Dieu une nature et trois personnes. Par-delà ces chiffres et ces mots, quels sont les enjeux de ce langage ? Il a été marginalisé dans le christianisme vécu, qui lui-même l’a été dans la recherche de salut. On a cru en Dieu sans la Trinité et visé le bonheur sans faire appel à Dieu. L’emboîtement de ces deux phénomènes a rendu le langage trinitaire surréaliste ou insignifiant, affaire de spécialistes ou objet d’historiens.

Aujourd'hui où sa signification et sa crédibilité s’estompent, un bilan s’avère opportun pour cet emblème de la spécificité chrétienne. Pourquoi et comment est-on passé des récits évangéliques à ce langage théologique et doctrinal ? Et comment réciproquement conviendrait-il de subordonner son interprétation et son emploi à la mutation qu’opère la Bonne Nouvelle dans la culture ?

The Trinity, beyond words and numbers

The Christian Trinity attributes to God one nature and three persons. Beyond these numbers and these words, what are the challenges of this language ? It was marginalized in lived Christianity, which itself was marginalized in the search for salvation. We believed in God without the Trinity and aimed for happiness without appealing to God. The interlocking of these two phenomena has made the Trinitarian language surrealist or insignificant, a matter for specialists or an object for historians.

Today when its meaning and credibility are fading, an assessment is timely for this emblem of Christian specificity. Why and how did we move from evangelical stories to this theological and doctrinal language? And how would it be appropriate to subordinate its interpretation and its use to the mutation that the Good News brings about in culture ?
