Lecture and Workshop by Shayla Bott - Associate Professor of Ballet at Brigham Young University, Brenda Critchfield - Director of Dance Medicine and Wellness Facility for the Brigham Young University Department of Dance and Ashley Ivory Parov - Adjunct Instructor, Assistant Artistic Director of Theatre Ballet at Brigham Young University (Utah, USA).

Her current assignments at include Artistic Direction of BYU Theatre Ballet and BYU Ballet Area Administrator. From the University of Utah, Shayla holds a BFA in ballet performance and an MFA in ballet with a focus on music, choreography and pedagogy. After retiring from a professional career with Utah Metropolitan Ballet, she has continued to choreograph and teach in professional and academic venues. Her creative work has received multiple awards. Shayla is certified in Progressing Ballet Technique, and Stott Pilates Matwork and Reformer.

We believe that a combination lecture and physical workshop would be ideal for this presentation. The first portion of the hour will be used to show the research method, particularly findings from the postural analyses and functional movement screenings. The second hour will be dedicated to teaching participants simple analysis techniques and physically experimenting with portions of the cross training.

Our motivation for conducting this research project is to further understand the postural and muscular deficiencies present in pre-professional ballet dancers and to utilize science-based training solutions to address these issues. By conducting a postural analysis and functional movement screening on each dancer at the beginning of the season (mid-August 2019), we will find postural and muscular deficiencies, compile these deficiencies into common groups, and then devise treatment plans for each common fault. These treatment plans will be overseen by our dance medicine practitioner and given during technique class at least three times per week. Periodic assessment procedures will track the progress of each dancer throughout the year-long study. It is our hope to develop universal training modalities which will further classical ballet training and help create strong, injury resistant dancers
