“The Art of the Solo Dance”

The Art of the Solo Dance is an experiential workshop exploring methods that enable the artist to free the body and draw inspiration from habitual movement patterns in order to strengthen uninhibited individual artistic expression in dance improvisation and examining how dance improvisation can inspire choreography.

Part 1 of the workshop consists of a warm-up designed to establish a sense of ease, focus, and openness when moving.

Part 2 of the workshop cultivates artistic expression through extension and expansion of habitual movement, thus creating nonlocomotor abstract dance gesticulations.

Part 3 of the workshop explores time, shape, space, and energy through movement within an improvisational structure. Elaborating upon the gesticulations from Part 2, dancers work within given frameworks to move beyond the internal editor to construct locomotor movement that occurs as impromptu reactions to stimuli.

Part 4 is the culmination of the work in Parts 1, 2, and 3 to create a solo dance composition work-in-progress.

Part 5 of the workshop is a performance of Memoir of a Mythomaniac: the True Story of a Compulsive Liar (or Tallulah Dies), a solo dance composition created through the utilization of the dance improvisations explored in this workshop.
