Lenka Novakova

Lenka Novakova is a Czech-Canadian artist, researcher, teacher and a PhD candidate at The Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Society and Culture; at Concordia University, in Montreal. Over the last ten years Lenka has been involved in creation of large scale performative-architectural environments, audio-visual landscapes and performances. These often act as public prototypes of her research, where the sliding agencies of ‘Scenography’ – ‘Performative Environment’ – ‘Peformance,’ constantly shift the mobility between the roles of a performer and audience. Lenka has been involved with La Mama Umbria, in Spoleto Italy over the summer 2016 exploring the intersection of theatre and visual arts. She is an active member of Hexagram and Matralab at Concordia, a recipient of numerous fellowships, awards and presents her work in Canada and abroad. In pursuit of her research she worked with institutions such as The Corning Museum of Glass, Urban Glass, Vermont Studio Center or La Chambre Blanche in Quebec and Santa Fe Art Institute. She presented her work at Project Integral Sao Paulo-Quebec, SASC Sao Paulo, Brazil, DMZ festival in Korea, Gallery Puls, Alvik, Norway and USF Verftet, Bergen, Norway and at the Historical Hospital Kuks in the Czech Republic.

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

The session will explore the expanding dimension of performative space and focus on the sliding role of scenography within the margins of performance and visual arts. Lehman’s idea of postdramatic theatre opened up ways to exploring the materiality of performance. Contemporary interactive tools and technology expanded these notions even further enabling scenographic practices to venture beyond the stage of theatres into the public domain and the visual arts sphere.

In this seminar and workshop, Lenka Novakova will provide theoretical and historical background of expanded scenographic practices, embracing the materiality of performative space, as well practical tools to explore these margines in an actual physical setting. Through practical activities, and discussion, participants will generate new perspectives of spatial performance, performative agents and the shifting role of audience.

Presentation format: lecture-seminar in combination with a practical workshop session followed by a brief activity and discussion.
