LauraWayth

The seeds of this work come from Viewpoints training (as developed by Anne Bogart and the SITI company) and incorporates other elements of physical theatre. This workshop was first developed on a visit to the Shanghai Theatre Conservatory in 2010 and further developed in residence at Babes Bolyai University in Romania. It requires active participation and I feel will be of equal relevance and interest to actors, directors and designers.

This interactive acting/directing workshop investigates the actor’s use of space. The workshop explores ways that space functions as its own language and even transcends language; the arrangement of people and objects in a stage space tells stories and creates character relationships even when no words are spoken. We will use still photography as an entry-point for developing an understanding of how actors and directors use stage space. We will first understand elements of composition and relationship in a photograph, and then discover how those same compositional elements translate into stage space.
