Amanda Hornberger is a Musical Theatre BFA student at the University of Central Florida (UCF). She performed as a Bird Girl in Seussical the Musical and Lt. Genevieve Marshall in South Pacific at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre. Recently, she was the Janet understudy in UCF’s production of The Drowsy Chaperone, and Ensemble understudy (performed) and Madeline understudy in the Orlando Shakespeare Theatre’s The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. She is from Pennsylvania, USA, and has a passion for the German language that stems from her German heritage. She has a B2 Level certificate in German.

PRESENTATION OVERVIEW

American musical theatre artists are in high demand in Europe, because the training for musical theatre is incredibly strong in America as it is often considered one of our most developed “home-grown” art forms. Frequently, however, native actors are not properly prepared for what waits on the other side of the ocean due to inherent cultural differences and the professional expectations of the host country. This presentation will highlight the creation of the primary author’s practical guide to performing musical theatre abroad through academic and experiential research gained through professional training at the International Performing Arts Institute in Kiefersfelden, Germany, interviews with key German musical theatre professionals and a culminating performance project in America. Though this presentation focuses on one area of the theatrical world (musical theatre), it hopes to provide a template for those who wish to pursue their native arts in receptive non-native settings.
