With the competing demands on performing arts educators’ energy and effort with performances, productions, fundraising and scheduling, often times their own personal growth and professional growth are placed secondary. We must not lose sight of our passion for what we perform and what inspires us to teach. Pursuing our personal and professional development as artists while teaching to draw out the artistry and talents of others require a balance of energy, passion and time.
This workshop uses the ten basic principles of effective teachers (Master Teachers) to take an in-depth look at effective teaching, professional development and personal growth within the performing arts. William Buskist, Professor of Psychology at Auburn University states, “The qualities of a master teacher represent only a starting point and not the destination for excellence in teaching.”
This seminar also touches upon the opportunities for professional development within the performing arts. “Balancing Artistry with Education” addresses personal growth and passion as performers. Whether they are musicians, artists, dancers or actors, one must feed the “personal-self”. Winston Churchill once stated, “Before you can inspire with emotion, you must be swamped with it yourself. Before you can move their tears, your own must flow. To convince them, you must yourself, believe.”

Dr. Rand maintains an active schedule as a guest conductor, clinician, adjudicator, and guest lecturer throughout the United States.
Active in scholarly and creative endeavors, Dr. Rand has presented numerous workshops to music educators. She recently presented and conducted in Minnesota, Alabama, North Carolina, and Florida.
Dr. Rand received her degrees from the University of Tampa, University of South Florida, and Doctor of Musical Arts in conducting from the University of Miami.
Dr. Catherine Rand is the Director of Bands at Florida International University, where she conducts the Wind Ensemble, Chamber Winds, and graduate conducting.
