There is a Muslim teacher out there who uses Matthew 5 to divide Christianity, his name Dr. Naik. He sounds smart and confident but is reall pretty silly. He doesn't know the scriptures and gets his info from Adventist or Jehohah's Witnesses. Very immature arguments.
Matthew 5:17
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
Matthew 5:18
For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
He uses this verse to say the Law of Moses would continue forever till the earth passes, contradicting the Apostolic teaching. Where does he go wrong? It is the wording Christ used he doesn't understand. The word "destroy" implies a physical force overthrowing the law. It can be tied to violence. The same word is used in John 2:19 of Christ's death. In other passages it is tied directly to the word violence.
John 2:19
Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.
And falling into a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the forepart stuck fast, and remained unmoveable, but the hinder part was broken with the violence of the waves.
Jesus wasn't claiming the law couldn't be fulfilled or cease, but that it would not be through violent overthrow. Jesus in this regard taught the opposite of Islam which seeks violent overthrow when necessary. This actually disproves Muhammed. It is his opposite.
It means the law would be as stable as heaven and earth without a single jot missing until fulfilled. Jesus would complete every jot and tittle of the precepts of law and prophecy. Then Jesus compares the stability of the law to his teachings and precepts. He is comparing the Law of Moses with the Kingdom of Christ.
Matthew 5:19
Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach [them,] the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
This is comparible to Hebrews chapter two.
Hebrews 2:2
For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;
Hebrews 2:3
How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard [him; ]
Dr. Naik tries to say Jesus was a Jew and simply followed Judaism, but the Law and Salvation were distinct and different.
