Catholic Sees
Most Catholic sees are not actually apostolic. In other words there was a break in the line of Bishops that can't be traced to the Apostles.
Most modern sees were established after the Muslim conquests of Europe. When Muslims invaded North Africa and Southern Europe, many of the churches were destroyed and the Christians either forced to convert or enslaved. Christianity lost most of its foot print in Muslim held territory.
The catholic sees that now exist were planted after the Muslim conquests. Catholics moved back in and established their Bishops, often in different cities than the original churches.
Macedonia
Jerusalem
Cyprus
Antioch
Germany
Portugal
Britain
etc
These Catholic sees cannot trace themselves to the apostles, as if established by the apostles. One good example is Macedonia. The apostles established churches with elders/bishops in Phillippi and Thessalonica. After the Muslim conquests Catholics established Clement of Ohrid as Bishop of the area.

Notice
After the adoption of Christianity in 865, religious ceremonies in Bulgaria were conducted in Greek by clergy sent from the Byzantine Empire. Fearing growing Byzantine influence and weakening of the state, Boris viewed the adoption of the Old Slavonic language as a way to preserve the political independence and stability of Bulgaria. With a view thereto, Boris made arrangements for the establishment of two literary academies where theology was to be taught in the Slavonic language. The first of the schools was to be founded in the capital, Pliska, and the second in the region of Kutmichevitsa.
865 did not signal the original adoption of Christianity, but the re-adoption under modern Catholic rule. It was in different cities than Phillippi and Thessalonica, a city a few miles away from those originals.
The church in the area of Macedonia, was re-established under Catholic rule, it was not the original and did not use the original bishops, and is not the original apostolic church. The same can be said of many Catholic sees in Africa, the middle east, and the byzantine empire.
The new sees pretty much made theological war with existing Christians of Germany, France, Portugal, and Britain. They were taken over politically and at times with force. Those churches North of the Muslim takeover did not embrace the Papacy and other parts of Catholic dogma.
The slow takeover that followed the re-establishment under the Catholic theology was gradual, even the invasion of England by the Catholic Churches of Europe 1060's, original Bishops were displaced or killed and new Bishops from Europe took their places. Bishops who taught believer's baptism were displaced and replaced with bishops teaching modern Catholic theology. It took about 200 years for all of Europe to be dominated.
During the early Muslim conquests 620-750AD churches as far West of Rome as Spain and Portugal were rooted out so that almost all of Christianity was lost, Many of the churches moved north.
Later conquests saw the fall of Italy.
From 750 to 1200 almost all of Europe was brought under Roman Catholic rule.Starting with Clement of Ohrid and his battles with the churches of Germany. 860-920.
His see was not original.
In Portugal ecclesiastical power of Bishops were not established until after the Muslim conquest.
