The use of believers baptism had an unbroken line of apologists starting from the New Testament and all through the centuries. Apart from a few misapplied verses that can be easily overcome Catholics had no real evidence of infant baptism.

Irenaeus - taught believers baptism, many use one passage to say he taught infant baptism, but he seems to have been speaking of sanctification of all ages, Christ passing through all life stages toward sanctification through example, infants are taught Christian principles through modeling, they learn from birth. This sanctification leads to rebirth in baptism later in life.
Polycarp - baptized at 18 based on the Harris fragment
Donatist group - taught believers baptism from 2nd century in Africa through the 15th century in Britain.
Helvidius - lived in Rome when infant baptism caught on and he countered it
Jovinian - countered Roman church as a different faith in Rome itself. He seems to have attended a different congregation than those practicing infant baptism.
Pelagius - Countered infant baptism, showing churches North of Rome did not accept it
