It is the anniversary of the dropping of the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
On this day in 1945, the aeroplane 'Enola Gay' carried the uranium bomb, nicknamed 'Little Boy' and dropped it over the city of Hiroshima.
Over 118,661 people died within the first 24 hours. At least 100,000 people were killed instantly as the bomb exploded. In fact, with the after effects of radiation nearly 200,000 people died over a long period, and child deformities were common after the attack.
The Second World War is the only time that nuclear weapons have been used in aggression. After the War, both the United States and Soviet Union went into a 'Cold War' for nearly 50 years, with both sides having nuclear weapons that could have completely destroyed the Earth and all its inhabitants.
