Ed Miliband, the younger brother of fellow contender David, has won the election for leader of the Labour party, narrowly beating his brother by a wafer-thin majority.
He now becomes Her Majesty's Leader of the Opposition, and has a massive task ahead of him of uniting the Labour party behind him, following their defeat in this year's general election, after the disastrous leadership of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Ed Miliband is more centre-left of the party, which is a remarkable about turn from the 'New Labour' politics of former Premiers' Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. Mr Miliband wants to lead the party away from the 'New Labour' era and bring the party more up-to-date with modern politics, and form a formidable leader as opposition to the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition that is in government.
Only time will tell whether he can unite the Labour party and lead it to victory once more, if the coalition collapses or follows through to its 5-year term.
