My name is Daryl Lees, and I was born in 1965, at a hospital in Nottinghamshire, in the United Kingdom. My mother's name is Jill, and my father's name was William . He died on New Year's Eve 2001, just one day short of his 75th birthday, which would've been on New Year's Day. There aren't many people who are born on the beginning day of one year, and die on the last day of another year - he was the kind of man who would've liked that!
Although I am partially disabled, I like to keep my independence and my family and friends help me to achieve this, for which I am truly grateful to them all - for their love and support.
My mother and father divorced in 1974, and in 1976 my mother remarried to my stepfather Richard, known to us all in the family and his friends as Mac.I have three sisters and a brother. My sisters names are Jill, June and Karen and my brother's name is Kevin. Between them they have fourteen children, and they have 23 children so I am an uncle to fourteen and a great uncle to 23 children. One of them, our Natalie, has just given birth to a baby girl, so I also a great-great uncle now too! My sisters Jill and June are identical twins, and just 10 minutes separate them!
I was educated at Morven Park Infants School, Jeffries Junior School and Ashfield Comprehensive School. I began schooling in 1969 and left in 1982, with standard educational results.
I started work soon after leaving school. I commenced on a YOP (Youth Opportunity Programme) at Ashfield Builders Merchants Ltd, and worked there for about a year, then started another YOP scheme at an electrical store named Wigfalls. Within three months I started full-time employment at the Coronation Social Club, locally known as 'The Corra'. I started there in 1984 and left in 1990, having reached the position of Head Barman. I then started work at the well-known hosiery manufacturer Pretty Polly Ltd, whre I worked for about a year before having to leave through ill-health, which has stayed with me ever since then.
