As an cross country athlete we sometimes have hard workouts early in the morning. Those workouts never go as well as wanted. The reason? My body isn't woken up yet. There isn't much you can do about it. This is why during race days we wake up at the least four hours before the race. We also run two miles to help speed up the wake up process. Your blood insulin levels have dropped low, your blood sugar is very stable, and your fat cells are “wide open” to let fat into your bloodstream to be converted into ketones to produce easily accessible fuel for your brain and muscles. In this fasted state you are no longer relying solely on your body’s limited carbohydrate stores to create energy. Instead, you are accessing your fat stores and using ketones to run. The longer you run, the greater your production of ketones, and running begins to feel easier…for a limited time, at least.
