Handout for notes

Los Animales

Learn to say a ton of animals in Spanish! Write their names down next to their pictures.

Can you name each animal in Spanish as it appears in this compilation?

Every language has its own way of saying what animals "say". It's interesting to see the verbs for "bray, whinny, bah, crow, croak," etc and to see how animal sounds are written. Here are some videos featuring animal sounds.

This super silly song is about a turkey wanting to escape his fate of being eaten by Americans. He runs away... Turkey = El Pavo

Llegó el pavo = The turkey arrived!

Learn about Los Alebrijes

Make your own Alebrije!

Traditionally, alebrijes combine air, water and land animals. Decide on three or four animals that you could combine to create a fantastical creature.

Make some quick sketches of how the animal could look and pick your favorite.

Depending on time and materials available, you can create this alebrije several different ways:

  1. Hand-illustrated and colored with marker, sharpie, or paint

  2. Molded out of clay or model magic, let dry and then color

  3. Paper-Mache, making sure surface is smooth; let dry, then paint

Name your creature by skillfully combining parts of the animals Spanish names into a new name.

Another idea: On poster paper, include images of the regular animals and their names along the edge. Then, include your own drawing and its new name in the center.
