Demonstratives

This, that, these, those

Demonstratives are both adjectives and pronouns. And, just like most Spanish adjectives and pronouns, they have gender and number.

If what you are referring to has no gender, use "ESTO" for This and "ESO" for That.

Situations do not have gender:

¡Esto es absurdo! This is absurd!

Eso es muy malo. That is very bad.

There are two more Spanish demonstratives that we don't have in English.

They translate to "that" as in "that one over there" and "those" as in "those over there".

Aquel (that over there) - masculine

aquella (that over there) - feminine

aquellos (those over there) - masculine

aquellas (those over there) - feminine

Examples:

Singular

  • ¿Te gustó ese libro? Did you like that book?

  • Necesitas esa mochila. You need that backpack.

  • ¿Quieres este pan? Do you want this bread?

  • ¿Te gusta esta gorra? Do you like this cap?

  • ¿Ves aquel carro? Es mío. Do you say that car over there? It's mine.

  • No toques aquella olla. No touch that pot over there.

  • Esto/Eso es muy bueno. This/That is very good.

Plural

  • Me gustan estas galletas. I like these cookies.

  • No me gustan estos zapatos. I do not like these shoes.

  • Esos zapatos son muy feos. Those shoes are very ugly.

  • Esas chicas están locas. Those girls are crazy.

  • Aquellas mujeres son mis maestras. Those women over there are my teachers.

  • No conozco a aquellos chicos. I don't know those boys over there.
