Duolingo

What is Duolingo?

Duolingo is a (mostly) free language learning program that can be used cross-platform. Download it from iTunes, Google Play or access it online at www.duolingo.com. We will be using the free version in class.

Spanish students will have weekly graded experience goals. More on that later.

How do I get started with Duolingo?

Watch this video to learn how to get started with Duolingo on your apple/Android phone or tablet.

Recommendation:

When you sign up, click "Sign up with Google" and use your shelbyed.org account for automatic login when you are using a school chromebook.

On a chromebook or PC/Apple computer, visit http://www.duolingo.com

Favorite it or Bookmark it so you don't have to type it next time.

How do I show my teacher what I've done?

You won't earn any points if you don't join the class because your teacher won't be able to see your progress.

Make sure you have created a profile in Duolingo and that you are logged into your account.

Your teacher will give you a class code and/or link to join.

Either click the link that your teacher provides to you, or click here: join.duolingo.com and type in the class code you were given.

Exploratory Spanish: Your join link and code will be in Schoology in the Duolingo folder.

Spanish 1, 2 and 3: Your join links and codes will be in your Google Classroom.

How do I get the most out of Duolingo?

Watch the following video, please. Even if you already have experience, you can learn something!

Duolingo for a grade? How does that work?

  • Duolingo is a weekly bronze grade. The "week" runs from Monday 12 a.m. -Sunday 11:59 p.m. Students should be getting Duolingo done as homework unless the teacher arranges to use class time. If we are out of school (such as Thanksgiving and Spring breaks), no work is required. We will have 7-8 weekly assignments per quarter. Quarantined students are required to complete this work. If you are too sick to work, parents need to be in communication with the school so teachers know.

  • Points can be earned by completing stories (not available on all platforms) and completing/strengthening lessons in the learning tree. Each lesson has levels (up to 5). It is recommended to reach at least level 3 before moving to another topic. I also recommend keeping a Duolingo journal of new words learned so when you are asked to spell them, you have notes handy.

  • Partially completed weekly assignments will earn partial points. For example, if you are supposed to complete 100 points in a week and you only earn 35 points, you will earn a 35/100 in the gradebook.

  • If you do your work using an account other than the one you joined your Spanish class with, your teacher will not be able to see your progress. You will earn the points that the program shows, which would be 0.

  • You cannot work ahead to have a week off. Any extra work benefits your learning and growth, but will not be entered into iNow.

  • No late work-- There is not a make up system in place for you to recover missing points. A week missed is a week missed. If you are too sick to work, a parent needs to contact the school and arrangements will be made.

  • Tech issues

    • Traditional students: if something happens to your technology/internet access at home, please use available resources at school. Your lunch teacher will probably allow you to do your Duolingo during lunch hour.

    • Remote students: if something happens to your technology/internet access, parents should be in contact with the school promptly to inform us so we can accommodate. Lack of communication on your part will not create an emergency for me.
