Present Tense Irregular Yo forms

And the pronunciation of the Spanish letters G and J

Learning Target: I can identify which verbs have irregular YO forms and conjugate and translate them in the present tense.

    • I know the meaning of the irregular yo form verbs and can use them logically in sentences

Present Tense Irregular YO forms

Verbs to know the present tense forms

  • saber & conocer & ver

  • dar, ir and estar

  • tener and venir

  • poner, salir, hacer, traer

  • special mention of oír, caer and decir

Go-Yo verbs

  1. poner - to put (yo pongo)

  2. hacer - to do / to make (yo hago)

  3. salir - to leave / to go out (yo salgo)

  4. traer - to bring (yo traigo)

  5. tener - to have (yo tengo ; e--> ie stem change)

  6. venir -to come (yo vengo; e--> ie stem change)

  7. decir - to say / to tell (yo digo; e--> i stem change)

Decir is an e: i stem changing verb in addition to being a "go" verb.

Hacer is a regular verb, other than the yo-go form.

Ejemplos

  • Yo siempre digo la verdad, pero tú dices mentiras.

          • I always tell the truth, but you tell lies.

  • Yo vengo aquí todos los sábados. ¿Tú vienes a menudo?

          • I come here every Saturday. Do you come often?

  • Mi primo tiene 4 hermanos, pero yo sólo tengo uno.

          • My cousin has 4 brothers, but I only have 1.

  • Yo pongo mis camisetas en mi guardaropa. ¿Dónde pones las tuyas?

          • I put my t-shirts in my dresser. Where do you put yours?

  • Ustedes salen frecuentemente, pero yo casi no salgo.

          • Y'all go out often, but I almost never go out.

  • ¿Dónde hacen su tarea? Yo hago la mía en la cocina.

          • Where do y'all do your homework? I do mine in the kitchen.

Divide into small groups. I will assign you 2-3 GoYo verbs. Prepare each verb's Tchart and prepare to explain each to the class.

These 4 ER verbs are regular other than yo form.

    1. caber - to fit into (yo quepo)

    2. saber - to know (facts and information) (yo )

    3. ver - to see (yo veo)

    4. dar - to give (yo doy)

Ejemplos

  • Miguel no cabe en la tina pero yo quepo. Miguel doesn't fit in the tub, but I fit.

  • ¿Quién sabe la respuesta?, porque yo no la . Who knows the answer, because I don't know it.

  • --¿Ves la fuga? --Sí, la veo. Do you see the leak? Yes, I see it.

  • Mi abuela siempre da regalos chafas. Pero yo doy regalos buenos. My grandmother always gives cheap gifts. But, I give good gifts.

In a small group, complete a T chart for the above 4 verbs, each on a different index card. Turn them in and we'll compare answers.

Remember to add each of these to your activity K because they are unique.

Verbs ending in GUIR = GO in Yo

  1. seguir - to follow (yo sigo)

  2. perseguir - to chase (yo persigo)

  3. conseguir - to obtain/get (yo consigo)

  4. distinguir - to distinguish (yo distingo)

Verbs ending in CER & CIR = ZCO in Yo

    1. conocer - to know (personally, to be familiar with) (yo conozco)

    2. traducir - to translate (yo traduzco)

    3. conducir - to drive (yo conduzco)

    4. producir - to produce (yo produzco)

Ejemplos

  • No consigo un buen trabajo. Pero, Édgar siempre consigue buenas oportunidades.

  • Yo conduzco como un profesional. ¡Tú conduces como un borracho!

  • Ellos conocen a muchos famosos. ¡Yo no conozco a ni uno!

In small groups, I will give you 1 verb from each section. Conjugate each on a separate index card and we will look at our conjugations.

Add 1 -GUIR verb and 1 -CER verb and 1 -CIR verb example to activity K.

Saber vs Conocer - Know the difference!

  1. Yo quien es Jennifer Lopez.

    • I know who Jennifer Lopez is. (Fact/Info)

  2. No conozco a Jennifer Lopez.

    • I don't (personally) know Jennifer Lopez. (Familiarity with a person)

  3. ¿Sabes dónde está Wilsonville?

    • Do you know where Wilsonville is? (Fact / Info)

  4. No conocemos bien Wilsonville. ¿Dónde está el banco?

    • We don't know Wilsonville well. Where's the bank? (familiarity with a place)

All verbs ending in GER and GIR end in JO in yo form to keep the soft G sound

  1. recoger- to pick up (yo recojo)

  2. fingir - to pretend (yo finjo)

  3. escoger - to choose (yo escojo)

  4. eligir - to elect or select (yo elijo)

Add at least 1 GER verb and 1 GIR verb to your activity K.

Examples

¿Cuándo recoges a tu hermano? When do you pick up your brother?

Yo recojo a mi hermano los miércoles. I pick up my brother on Wednesdays.

The spanish J (jota) always makes a sound similar to the English H.

The Spanish G (ge) makes the same sound as a Spanish J if it comes before an E or an I

The Spanish G makes a hard G sound (like the English word "Go!" in all other letter combinations.
