La Gramática: Ser vs Estar

Remember: Ser and Estar both mean "to be" in Spanish.

  • They are not interchangeable.

  • You have to know both ways to say I am, both ways to you He is, She is, They are, We are, You guys are, You are (informal) and You are (formal)

  • Copy the conjugations along with their translations, and make a poster for your notes like the two below: one for each verb.

I can think of an English sentence that uses to be (am, is or are) and determine if I would need to use a form of the Spanish verb SER or ESTAR and explain why.

Read these sentences. Look at how in English, we are using the same verb for both sentences. But, in Spanish, the verb changes. Do you see any patterns?

  1. Juan es mi amigo. Juan is my friend. Juan está feliz. Juan is happy.

  2. Karen y Juan son estudiantes. Karen and Juan are students. Karen y Juan están en la escuela ahora. Karen and Juan are at school now.

  3. Yo soy de Los Estados Unidos. I am from the USA. Yo estoy en Columbiana. I am in Columbiana.

  4. eres muy alto. You are very tall. Tú estás encima de mi pie. You are on top of my foot.

  5. Nosotros somos hermanos. We are siblings. Nosotros estamos enfermos. We are sick (ill).

ser vs estar introduction

"For how you feel and where you are, always use the verb estar."

Make your own Ser and Estar acronym posters. For Ser, use TICO for your acronym. For Estar, you can use SALE or LEAPS. Include what verb the acronym is for, the acronym going down the left side, what each letter in the acronym stands for and at least 3 Spanish/English examples.
