Unit 5: ¿Te Gusta?

Learning Targets

1. I can express my opinion about different activities in complete thoughts.

2. I can explain and identify "infinitive verbs"

3. I can communicate about this topic through speaking, writing, reading and listening.

¿Qué te gusta hacer?

What do you like to do?

In this lesson, learn how to express how you feel about different activities.

Grammar Note

Spanish doesn't always translate literally into English. Word order changes, and sometimes, there is no exact equivalent for what you want to say. The following phrases are examples of this. When translating, we don't translate these into their literal meaning. Instead, we match the Spanish with the closest normal sounding translation in English.

1. To say that you like something in Spanish, you have to say that it pleases you.

  • ¿Te gusta? - Does it please you? (Do you like it?)

  • Me gusta - It pleases me (I like it)

  • Me gusta mucho - It pleases me a lot (I really like it)

  • No me gusta - It does not please me (I don't like it)

  • No me gusta mucho - It doesn't please me a lot (I don't really like it)

Copy these "Me gusta" phrases into 4 columns from least to most preferred. Then, scroll through these hobbies and activities in Spanish.

When you read the activity, think about how much you enjoy doing it. Then, say the phrase that best describes your preference. Last, copy the activity into that column. Don't forget to include what it means with a translation or picture.

Grammar note:

Both English and Spanish have infinitive verbs. A verb is a word that shows action (run, jump, study). An infinitive verb is a verb in its natural form. In English, this form starts with "to". In Spanish, it ends in either "ar", "er" or "ir".

Name 1 verb from the set that has each ending and say what it means.

Silver Vocabulary Collage Project

  3. Choose 4-5 activities that best represent you for each section and write their Spanish names

  4. Use illustration, magazine cutouts or internet clipart/images to add a visual for each of the activities you include

Your final project should be organized chaos, like a collage.

2. Other ways to express how you feel about an activity

  • Me encanta - It delights me (I love it)

  • Me importa (mucho) - It matters (a lot) to me

  • No me interesa - It doesn't interest me

    • Me aburre- it bores me

  • If you aren't sure how you feel about something because you don't have experience with it, you can say, No sé si me gusta (I don't know if I like it.)

  5. Circle game. Form a circle with your classmates. The first person says an activity from our vocab (Just in Spanish). The next person repeats what they said, then adds a new one. This keeps going until a participant cannot repeat the list or messes it up or can't think of anything to add. They're out, then their turn passes to the next person. Last one in that can recite the whole list and add something to it wins.
