Unit 6 page 3

Present tense

He/She forms

Learning Targets

1. I can read/write/listen and speak in the present tense to talk about things people do at school, home, and during free time.

2. I can do #1 by learning to conjugate regular verbs in the present tense.

3. I can compare and contrast "infinitive" verbs and "regular" verbs.

4. I can say the days of the week and what I do on those days

5. I can say what I do "when/if" there's a certain type of weather.

To say "he/she/it" does something with regular verbs

Who are we talking about?

  • él / ella

  • Paco / Teresa

  • el hombre / la mujer

  • mi maestro

  • mi padre / madre

  • mi perro

  • ¿quién?

How do we form the verb?

Start with the STEM (no ending).

Then, AR verbs use the ending -a

ER and IR verbs both use the ending -e

  • Hablar --> Ella habla español. She speaks Spanish.

  • Comer --> El niño come mocos. The boy eats boogers.

  • Vivir --> Mi perro vive afuera. My dog lives outside.

Practice A

Practice saying what people do and don't do. Put the verbs into the correct forms.

1. El perro (comer) plástico y (beber) agua.

2. Mi padre no (compartir) su dinero conmigo.

3. Mi maestro no (comprender) mi situación.

4. La directora de la escuela (cantar) bien.

5. El mono (bailar), (correr) y (andar) en bicicleta.

Practice B

Practice saying what people do and don't do. Use the prompts to make complete ideas. Use every word in the prompt. You may add more words if you desire.

1. El payaso / manejar / un carrito

2. La chica / masticar / chicle

3. Mi abuela / no vivir / en Alabama

4. El hombre / vender / su carro

5. Mi hermano / no escribir / poemas

Double Duty! Commanding people around

You can also use the He/She form to boss 1 friend around (not groups). When you tell someone what to do, it is called an AFFIRMATIVE command. When you tell someone what NOT to do, it's called a NEGATIVE command. We can only use these forms to give AFFIRMATIVE commands.

Miguel, habla en inglés, por favor. Miguel, speak in English, please.

Carla, come tu brócoli. Carla, eat your brócoli.

¡Oye! Canta la canción. Hey! Sing the song.

If you address someone, make sure to include a comma after their name.

Benji, dibuja Deku. = Benji, draw Deku. (Command) / Benji dibuja Deku. = Benji draws Deku. (Fact)

Practice C

Read these statements out loud. Turn them into commands. Read them aloud again. How are they written differently? How are they said differently?

1. David come fruta.

2. Sebastián juega bien.

3. Daniela lee libros.

4. Tomás abre la tienda los domingos.

5. Verónica usa la computadora.

Practice D

Be bossy. Make up 5 some commands you might tell a friend. Use at least 1 of each: AR verb, ER verb, IR verb.

FYI: All the verbs in our organized notes that we put "YO" or "irregular" next to and highlighted do not work for this activity.
