Cultural Appropriation
This topic will really connect with some students, particularly those more sensitive to the heart of the issue, while other students will be introduced to this concept for the first time.
In this era that we live in, whether you agree with these views or not, it is important to know, understand and respect that the issues addressed about cultural mis-appropriation are a deep-cutting matter for thousands, if not millions, of people who identify deeply with their cultures. Disregarding this matter as non-sense, or just being ignorant of it has cost some people their jobs and has caused them to endure ridicule across our nation.
A message from my culture to you.
These videos start the argument from some individuals who have been marginalized, who have been told to hide parts of their culture so that they could assimilate and fit in. These are people who have lived through oppression or their people have.
Debate For and Against
This video is interesting because it shows that people still have very strong opinions about whether something is offensive or not. Regardless of which side you agree with or if you're somewhere in the middle, you cannot deny that the girl who made the decision to wear the Chinese dress and post pictures of herself endured a lot of backlash from the nation. How embarrassing!
